I had a young lady in my second grade class who was struggling with reading fluency and comprehension. I was searching the internet one night for some resources that might help. I ran across a Pinterest post for Lyrics 2 Learn. I began using it in my second grade classroom and quickly became hooked. My students were engaged in a reading lesson!!! Not just one kid or some of my high kids, but all of my kiddos! I knew at that moment that I had found something special. The following weeks I began to tweak my implementation process to make it work for my students. I introduce a new Lyric on Monday. We listen to it three times together as a class and go through and pick out new and interesting words. We look for figurative language and try to determine the authors purpose. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are independent Lyrics days. My students log in with headphones and listen to the story 3 times, listen to the Hot Tips, and take a quiz each day. On Friday we again listen together to the song 3 times and then they independently completed the constructed response portion. (I choose to do just this part on paper since my kids are only in 2nd grade.) I Also added a language section that assess my students are various grade level standards related specifically to their story. As you can see by Friday I have a complete reading analysis that required deep and rich thinkers to dive into a piece of literature that just happens to be in a song form. All the while, my kiddos think they are having a great time. It is a win win in my classroom! Let me end with how the little girl in my class who inspired this whole process scored on her tests… On her pretest in August of 2015 she scored a 12 on the ELA benchmark. When she took the same assessment in May she made a 92!!! I have to give Lyrics2Learn some of the credit for this! Cheryl Nicolls
